If you have never heard of We Are Twin because they have a track called spaghetti head or piece of shit parmesan cheese, that is alright. Maybe you have seen their artwork and bought it. If that is the case then maybe spaghetti head and piece of shit parmesan cheese just makes sense for the label dropping the records. If you have heard their music and hate it, that is alright too. Maybe they just aren’t for you. But if you have ever seen We Are Twin live and felt like you have made a connection with a band you have never met, or if you own a shirt with a cowboy smoking a cig hanging out with an alien that says two speed twins on it, then Tracks is the record for you. Tracks is We Are Twin’s first release since 2016 and their third full length. When asked about the record Twin had this to say “The main thing is that we’re really confident about these songs. We have had a lot of different configurations over the past few years, so there was no predetermined Roles when we first started writing.” The songs definitely reflect this idea as each could be considered quite different musically from the next.
True philharmonic punk is the tagline for the band and Tracks fits right in with this except this time around there seems to be way more going on from song to song. I remember chucking towards the stage in Toronto where they were playings songs from there 2013 self titled when they played a song with electronica infused drums. Maybe it was from 2016, either way it was the only song they played that had it and Tracks is oozing with this sort of thing. The album starts with Go on Besides, one of the slower tracks on the record with ambient drum machines that bring to mind memories of hiding from school in your bedroom listening to Death From Above 1979’s You’re A Woman, I’m A Machine. From there the record flows from industrial disco back into a Hidden Cameras acoustic feeling. In the end though all the songs on Tracks have more in common with each other then not and the connection is brother Anthony and Jacob Vallillee. The way they play off of each other guitar wise and through there vocals reminds the listener that using click tracks and all the other tricks of the modern studio just doesn’t seem like it was Twin’s goal when they approached making Tracks. This isn’t to say that they don’t use technology or anything like that just that Tracks sounds human. It sounds live, alive, real. Songs like Radar and Now/Never have a tempo to them that will get the body moving which is a staple for We Are Twin. Anthony’s lyrics remain on point with satirical banter that although ridiculous is still sensible. There is even a Prince inspired song called I Am Executive right at the end just to make sure the listener knows they haven’t lost their mind. If you have been following We Are Twin for a while then you will see Tracks as a nice added step in the right direction for a band that was already on the right track.
